MOT equipment cost: what an MOT bay adds up to, and when it pays back.

Setting up an MOT testing station can cost from £9,795 to £34,995 or more, depending on the class of MOT bay and whether you build around an inspection pit or an MOT lift (published ranges from the Garage Equipment Association and Concept Garage Equipment, checked July 2026). But the equipment price is the easy half of the question. The test fee is capped at £54.85, so whether the bay ever pays back depends on your MOT testing volume and the follow-on work each test generates. The published prices

What MOT equipment costs in 2026

The published supplier figures cluster tightly, because the Garage Equipment Association and Concept Garage Equipment quote the same ranges in their guides:

  • Class 1 and 2 MOT bays (motorcycles): the average cost of setting up ranges from £9,795 to £13,995. The smallest footprint and the cheapest way into MOT testing.
  • Class 4 MOT bays (cars and passenger vehicles): the class 4 MOT bay ranges from £20,995 to £34,995, with the lower range being a class 4 MOT pit bay. Class 4 pit bays typically start from around £17,435.
  • Class 7 MOT bays (commercial vehicles up to 3,500kg design gross weight): the class 7 MOT bay ranges from £23,995 to £31,995, with the lower range being a class 7 MOT pit bay, and class 7 pit bays starting from approximately £20,000.

Three things sit behind those numbers. MOT bays with inspection pits come in cheaper than lift-based bays (a scissor lift or four-post MOT lift) and suit buildings with limited ceiling height, which is why the pit figure anchors the bottom of each range. An MOT bay package is more than the MOT lift or pit: it bundles the roller brake tester, emissions kit, headlight tester and the rest of the basic equipment required on the DVSA approved list, and since connected equipment became the standard, key items send results straight to the DVSA MOT testing service. And suppliers quote packages as standard, OPTL or ATL MOT bay packages; the automated test lane versions carry a higher price up front and take manual steps out of each test.

For comparison, Concept Garage Equipment and the GEA published nearly identical figures in 2023 (class 4 from £19,995, class 7 from £21,495), so new MOT equipment prices have barely moved in three years. What moves the total is everything the price lists leave out.

The hidden half

What the price lists leave out

No supplier guide we could find itemises the rest of the MOT bay setup, so the calculator gives each piece its own field instead of pretending a single number covers it:

Bay preparation and building work
A pit needs digging and lining; a lift needs floor loading checks; either needs the bay laid out to DVSA approval. Suppliers produce CAD drawings as part of a managed project, but the building work is quoted per site.
Calibration and maintenance
Test equipment is calibrated on a schedule, and an MOT bay that fails calibration stops earning until it’s fixed. Connected equipment carries its own running costs.
The tester
A nominated tester (often you) spends part of every week testing instead of doing repair work. Their time is the biggest running expense of the bay and the one most garages forget to count. Training and the annual assessment sit on top.
The bay’s share of the roof
A dedicated MOT bay occupies space that carries rent, rates and utilities whether it tests or not. That share belongs in the sums.

None of those appear on an equipment quote. All of them appear in your payback.

The two payback rows are the point of the whole page. The first assumes the MOT test earns its keep on fees alone. The second adds the repair work the tests bring in. For most garages the honest picture only appears on the second row.

The method

How the calculator works

Four steps, all visible, and you can check every one of them.

STEP 01
Add up the capital
Equipment and installation plus building work. This is the number payback is measured against.
STEP 02
Count the annual direct cost
Upkeep, the bay's share of the premises, and the tester's pay multiplied by the share of their time spent testing.
STEP 03
Work out the annual return
Tests per year times your fee, minus step 2's total, plus the follow-on contribution: tests that become repairs, times average invoice, times your margin.
STEP 04
Divide for payback
Capital divided by annual return, shown both with and without the follow-on work. The gap between the two rows is the point of the page.

Nudge the fee down to £35 and the tests to ten a week and the bay never pays back on fees at all: fees now lose £7,600 a year, the follow-on barely covers the loss, and the total payback stretches into decades. The calculator will tell you so rather than hide it. The equipment price matters far less than your testing volume and what happens to the advisories.
There's no VAT on the MOT fee itself, per the official fees page, and £54.85 is a maximum, not a set price. What you charge is a positioning decision; just make it deliberately, because every pound off the fee comes straight out of the per-test margin.

On fees alone, £30,000 of capital divided by £7,350 a year is a touch over four years to pay back. Now add the follow-on: 30% of 690 tests is 207 repair jobs, at £200 a time and 30% margin, worth £12,420 a year. Total annual return £19,770, and the payback drops to 18 months. Same bay, same initial investment. The difference is whether the work the test finds stays in your workshop.

And that's the honest version of the sums. Nudge the fee down to £35 and the tests to ten a week and the MOT bay never pays back on fees at all; the calculator will tell you so rather than hide it. The equipment price matters far less than your MOT testing volume and what happens to the advisories.

The argument

The MOT is a door, not a profit centre

Supplier guides describe MOT testing as a profitable industry, and the long-term maintenance revenue argument is real. But the fee cap does the arithmetic for you: £54.85 minus the tester's time, the calibration and the bay's share of the roof leaves a margin per test that would never justify £30,000 of capital on its own.

What justifies it is everything attached to the test. An MOT booking is a guaranteed annual visit from every car on your books, each one a fresh look at the vehicle, and each failure or advisory a repair that either stays with you or walks to whoever the customer calls next.

That's also why the follow-on fields in the calculator deserve real thought: capture rate is a process question (how advisories get quoted, how customers get reminded) more than a pricing one. Run your real numbers through the calculator and read the second payback row. If payback including follow-on work still runs past four or five years, the capital is probably better spent elsewhere, and subcontracting MOTs to a nearby test station keeps the customer relationship without the outlay. The bay starts making sense when your MOT testing volume is steady and the follow-on work reliably stays in your workshop.

Yes. £54.85 is the DVSA maximum fee for a class 4 vehicle, not a set price, and many garages discount below it to fill the diary. The calculator defaults to £45 for exactly that reason. There's also no VAT on the MOT fee itself, per the official fees page. There's no honest single answer, which is why this page is a calculator rather than a claim. The worked example lands at 18 months with follow-on work counted and about four years on test fees alone, and both numbers swing hard with test volume, your fee and your advisory capture rate. Anyone quoting a payback period without asking for those three numbers first is selling equipment.
